The project

Project Bottlebrush 2010 is an initiative of King’s Kids in the Netherlands. In the summer of 2010 a medical team will go to South Africa to provide medical care, education and training in the Bottlebrush slum. The program is divided up into three separate programs: medical care, hygiene, and nutrition.

Objectives

We want to realize the following objectives with project Bottlebrush 2010:

These objectives are part of the broader mission statement, which is: To improve the living standard in the community of Bottlebrush by providing medical care to children and making this sustainable through the training of Bottlebrush’s residents in providing medical care and education on hygiene and nutrition.

Project Bottlebrush 2010

Medical program

The medical team will mainly focus on medical care and mother and child care. One team will work in the medical clinic located in the community centre. The other team is mobile and will visit people at home. The team will also train 50 people to provide medical care themselves. There is a separate program for mother and child care. This program is focused to educate people about proper labor care, care of newborn babies, hygiene and nutrition.

Hygiene program

The hygiene program will focus on the following tasks: Hand out South African made shoes and underwear to children of the ages 2-10 Educate people about everyday hygiene, how it can be applied to everyday life and how it can prevent people from getting diseases and infections.

Nutrition Program

This program is meant to educate Bottlebrush citizens on healthy nutrition, specifically for children. We will also assist the Good News Centre feeding program where we will make food packages and hand them out in a structured, safe manner.

Partners

During the project we will work together with the Good News Centre, a local church in Durban. The people in the church have provided food programs over the last ten years. They are familiar with the area and have many contacts in Bottlebrush. King’s Kids has worked with the Good News Centre for the past five years and together they can really make this project a success!
